Interview with Heidi Gouws and Masa (Mosaic Association South Africa)
Q How long have you been a mosaic artist?
I started around 2008.
Q Have you attended any classes/workshops?
I started taking mosaic classes at the Piet-My-Vrou studio at The Rust-en-Vrede Gallery, located in Durbanville, and haven’t stopped since. I have also done the following courses.
- Stained Glass Course – 2007
- Classes at Piet-my-vrou studio from – 2008
- Suzanne Earls portrait workshop – 2017
Q What Inspires you to create mosaic art?
I prefer not to work with tiles, but I have always had an absolute passion for stained glass right from the start. The glass just speaks to you, it tells you what it wants you to do with it. I get my inspiration from any patterns I notice in nature, magazines or my own photos that I snap of anything and everything I find interesting. I just love taking photos. Strange and different colour combinations always manage to catch my eye.
Q What do you hope to achieve with your mosaic art?
To create beautiful images. My life’s philosophy is as follows:
I’m going to make everything beautiful, not only including things, but also relationships and the lives of people I meet. I’m going to try and live a beautiful life inside and outside.
Q How would you describe your mosaic style?
I enjoy experimenting with different ideas that can be created using glass. I also make mobiles and graffiti mosaics. I like big, impressive pieces, and I’m always trying something new.
